Er wuchs in St. Moritz auf, erlernte dort das Hotelfach, Konditor, Kellner, Koch, und betätigte sich als Skilehrer. Als Soldat erlernte er Gitarre und Akkordeon im Selbstunterricht und erfreute damit und zusätzlich singend seine Kameraden, verunglückte jedoch 1943 schwer und lag zwei Jahre im Lazarett. Mit seiner einschmeichelnden, melodischen Stimme gewann der neubenamste Vico Torriani 1946 in Zürich bei einem Gesangswettbewerb, arbeitete dann zunächst fürs Radio, trat in Nachtklubs auf und spielte 1947 seine erste Platte "Addio Donna Grazia" ein. Es folgten erste Gastspielreisen in Europa, die er alle selber organisierte: "Ich brachte meine eigenen, selber hergestellten Plakate in die Geschäfte und erklärte, wer ich bin." Schmachtende Geigen, seine schmalzige Stimme und südländischer Charme prägten in der Folge sein Image. Daneben begann er in über einem Dutzend Filme mitzuspielen, in denen er mit jungenhaftem Frohsinn und unerschütterlichem Optimismus gegen die üblichen Bedrängnisse realitätsferner Lustspiele ansang - die perfekte Vermarktung seiner Lieder.
